'When I used to use a spirometer, it was one of those old ones with the numbers on it and I had to track it in an Excel sheet, so this has been really nice, actually. It’s been good to not have to try to read the numbers on the old ones, you know? Sometimes they get worn off and stuff. So this has been cool because it just links to your phone and you have the data.'

Managing a chronic illness, especially a respiratory illness, is no easy task. There is so much that goes into self-managing a disease, especially a chronic illness like asthma, that can take a turn for the worse in just a matter of moments. Susan, a user of our patient app, knows just how complicated it can be to self-manage her asthma and keep track of her health data outside of appointments.

Before using our patient app, Susan used a traditional spirometer to measure her peak flow. Once reading the result of her peak flow, she’d use an Excel sheet to keep track of her numbers manually. Spirometers are incredibly beneficial when self-managing asthma. However, Susan reported that using a traditional spirometer sometimes came with downsides. She claims that it was occasionally hard for her to read the numbers on her spirometer, noting that the numbers would get worn off over time. This lack of clarity confused Susan, who questioned the accuracy of the numbers she added into her Excel sheet.

As Susan began to use our patient app, she was pleased to find that the Bluetooth spirometer that accompanies our app was accurate and easy to use. She mentioned that she is “very confident” in her Bluetooth spirometer peak flow readings, adding that the app is “easy to use, even for people who are not very tech-savvy. I think it’d be easy enough for everyone to use, and I think it would be good for people.” Susan told us that using a Bluetooth spirometer that connected to our app changed how she managed her asthma and increased her trust in the peak flow measurements that were recorded for her and sent to her pulmonologist.
